Full Job Description
BDQ (Books Data Quality) owns the accuracy of book metadata across Amazon's global catalog — author attribution, series linking, categorization, publisher relationships, and entity resolution. We're replacing legacy heuristic systems with LLM-powered inference at catalog scale. We need an SDM to lead one of our engineering teams. You'll manage the people, own the technical delivery, and drive migration off legacy systems. Key job responsibilities People management. You hire, develop, and retain SDEs. You run performance cycles, build promo cases, and coach engineers through the specific difficulty of shipping systems where 97% precision still means millions of wrong records. You create an environment where engineers can experiment with approaches that fail, while still hitting delivery dates. Technical ownership. You own production inference systems, data pipelines, and catalog services. You make hosting decisions (Bedrock vs. SageMaker vs. self-hosted) and manage inference costs as volume grows. Basic Qualifications: - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations - Experience in leading the definition and development of multi tier web services - Experience managing engineers - Experience partnering with product and program management teams - Experience in engineering Preferred Qualifications: - Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy - Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
