5+ years of full-time professional software development experience, experience owning and delivering medium-to-large technical projects, backend engineering fundamentals, experience building reliable, maintainable distributed systems in production, Proven ability to navigate complex architectural boundaries, instincts for production quality, observability, testing, rollout safety, performance, operational excellence

Full Job Description
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to define the backend foundations for Asana’s next-generation AI chat products. Chat Platform owns the intelligence and shared infrastructure behind the conversation—from tool selection and evaluation to observability and product enablement APIs—so teams across Asana can ship fast without rebuilding the same systems. The Infrastructure team builds the foundation that supports our web and mobile applications and our robust API. We build and operate the software that enables Asana’s security, scalability, and speed. Each day, we combine industry best practices and innovation to support this product-focused company. If you like working on shared abstractions, hard product-quality problems, and fast-moving AI systems, this role sits at that intersection. This role is based in our Vancouver office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams you partner with. What you’ll achieve Design, build, and evolve the backend platform that enables chat- and agent-powered product experiences across Asana, with a focus on reliability, scalability, and extensibility. Build shared APIs, services, and abstractions that help product teams ship chat experiences more quickly and consistently without re-solving the same infrastructure problems. Partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and peer AI engineering teams to translate product needs into durable platform capabilities and pragmatic technical roadmaps. Improve the performance, observability, and operational quality of systems that support enterprise-grade chat experiences, including areas like latency, availability, state management, and debugging.
