Day-to-day administration and maintenance of Vertex and related indirect tax systems

Maintain tax determination logic

and exemption configurations across billing and invoicing systems

Support indirect tax flows across checkout

and financial reporting systems

Monitor tax engine performance and troubleshoot tax calculation or integration issues across systems

Coordinate tax engine updates

and configuration changes in partnership with internal teams and external vendors

Execute testing activities including regression

and user acceptance testing for tax-related system changes

Support onboarding of new products

and jurisdictions into existing tax processes and systems

Assist with reconciliation processes between tax engine outputs

Maintain documentation

operational procedures

and system support playbooks for indirect tax operations

Support indirect tax audits by assisting with transaction-level data gathering

and system documentation

Help identify process improvement opportunities to enhance automation

We operate as strategic operators, not just compliance experts, embedding early in product, finance, policy, and infrastructure decisions to manage risk, unlock incentives, and enable OpenAI to grow responsibly and competitively worldwide. As OpenAI’s products, monetization models, and global infrastructure expand, our tax systems must scale with the same rigor and reliability as our product architecture. The team partners deeply with Financial Engineering, Product Engineering, and Finance Systems to build a modern tax technology stack that enables accurate, real-time tax determination across OpenAI’s global business. About the Role We’re hiring an Indirect Tax Technology Manager to support the ongoing configuration, maintenance, and operational management of OpenAI’s indirect tax technology environment. This role will focus on maintaining and enhancing indirect tax systems and workflows across billing, invoicing, ERP, and checkout processes to support OpenAI’s rapidly growing global business. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing day-to-day tax engine operations, supporting system implementations, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring reliable tax determination across indirect tax processes.
