What You'll Do.
Manage a comprehensive program for hazardous waste disposal
Train and supervise technicians and office staff
Ensure legal requirements for hazardous waste are met
Manage the department budget
Prepare budget requests and monthly forecasts
Manage a team of technical and administrative staff
Assign work priorities to maximize manpower
Assess and resolve complex HWM problems
Establish financial priorities for safety programs
Oversee budget development and expenditures
Monitor and audit operational expenditures
Ensure compliance with budget policies
and evaluation of consultants
Identify HWM priorities
Create and plan activities and projects
Serve as subject matter expert on hazardous waste
Rectify waste disposal protocols
Ensure follow up on corrective actions
Provide expertise to research community and Facilities Management
Liaise with government agencies
Create and maintain Emergency Response Assistance Plan
Communicate updated information with Transport Canada
Act as University contact for emergency drill activation
Plan and develop administrative and response procedures
Optimize services of HWM
Ensure creation and management of HWM policies
Oversee implementation of new initiatives
Create and deliver hazardous waste training
Identify training requirements for hazardous waste team
Organize regular training events
Manage hazardous waste from laboratory decommissioning
Ensure laboratories are safe after decommissioning
Take ownership of decommissioning process
Represent the Department at meetings
Participate in investigations
Prepare evidence for hearings and court appearances
Provide expertise in emergency response
Act as alternative safety officer during ICS functions
Ensure immediate action during emergency exercises
Oversee implementation of IT software solutions

Trains and supervises the technicians and office staff in the collection, transport, processing and disposal of waste. Ensures that legal requirements for hazardous waste and safety are met by staff and users of the program. Is responsible for the department budget. Prepares budget requests and monthly forecasts. **Primary Responsibilities:** * Manage a team of technical and administrative staff by providing guidance and leadership. Assign work priorities to maximize the use of available manpower following budget constraints; Assesses all complex HWM problems requiring specialized skills and resolves these problems. * Establish financial priorities in collaboration with the Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for various safety programs. Oversee the development of operating and other budgets, authorize, and monitor expenditures, audit operational expenditures, and ensure compliance with university and departmental budget policies and financial procedures * Manage the staffing process, supervision, and evaluation of external consultants working with Hazardous Waste Management. * In collaboration with the Associate Director of EHS, identify the HWM priorities. Create and plan activities and projects, including special projects and awareness
