What They're Looking For.
Must Have
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field, 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, Experience with overhead cranes or heavy industrial systems, PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar), HMI/SCADA systems, VFDs and motor control systems, Design and interpret electrical schematics, Interpret control systems, Industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.), Crane motion control (hoist, trolley, bridge), Familiarity with CMAA, NEC, and ASME standards
Nice to Have
Crane automation experience, Anti-sway systems experience, Load monitoring systems experience, System integration experience, Commissioning experience in industrial environments, Analytical skills, Problem-solving skills, Ability to work in industrial settings, Ability to work at heights

## Description Industrial Controls Engineer – Crane & Material Handling Systems Location: Ashland, VA (Onsite) Shift: 1st Shift Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire (6 months) Pay: Starting at $39+/hour (based on experience) Position Overview We are seeking a Controls Engineer with experience in industrial automation to support the design, integration, and improvement of control systems used in overhead cranes and lifting equipment. This role involves both new system development and upgrades to existing equipment, with a focus on performance, safety, and compliance. ## Key Responsibilities Controls Design & Development Design and develop electrical control systems for overhead cranes and material handling equipment Create and review PLC programs, HMI interfaces, and control logic for crane motion systems Develop detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts Select and integrate components such as VFDs, relays, sensors, and safety systems Ensure compliance with CMAA, NFPA 70 (NEC), and ASME B30 standards System Integration & Commissioning Lead and support installation, commissioning, and startup of crane control systems Configure and troubleshoot PLCs, VFDs, and communication networks Perform system testing, validation, and performance optimization Troubleshooting & Support Diagnose and resolve complex electrical and controls issues in crane systems Provide technical support for field service teams and maintenance personnel Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and modernization projects Collaboration & Continuous Improvement Work closely with mechanical engineers, project managers, and technicians Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers or technicians Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system reliability and efficiency ## Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience) 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, pref
