What You'll Do.
Deliver medical care to a wide variety of patients
Examine and treat patients independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals
Ensure proper illness and injury care and disease prevention
Prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests
Advise patients about continuing care
Perform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories
Function independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients
Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs
Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities
Implement interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability
Assist with the provision of care in accordance with facility
and federal regulations
Monitor the effectiveness of interventions
Facilitate the patient’s transition within and between health care settings
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals
patient and family decision making by providing educational tools
Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures

Eliciting and recording chief complaint and interval history
Eliciting and recording patient and family medical history
Measurement of visual acuity at a distance and near
Confrontation visual fields and Amsler grid testing
Central corneal thickness measurements
Intraocular pressure assessment
Administering visual fields examination
Assist physician with patient care (monitoring vitals and assist if patient distress) during office-based procedures
Laser procedures: capsulotomy
Minor slit lamp procedures: suture removal
Administration of ocular imaging including OCT (optical coherence tomography) and ocular photography (slit lamp
fundus and external photography)
Interpretation of glaucoma testing including visual field
Insertion and removal of hard
soft and contact lenses
including those used for bandage of the cornea
Administration of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents
Binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy
Observe refractive abnormalities and ocular disease
Prescription of eyeglasses
Examining patients of all ages
including children and the elderly
